Oud and Piano Dialogues is a collaborative music project led by oud player and composer Fuat Caner Tokgozol. The project brings the oud and piano together in an open musical conversation, exploring where Turkish modal traditions, western art music and and jazz improvisation meet. At the center of the project is the oud’s expressive melodic language. Tokgozol’s original compositions draw from makam-based forms and expand through improvisation and shifting meters. The piano is an equal voice in this exchange, responding to the oud and accompanying it.
The project features collaborations with acclaimed pianists Steven Long and Jemina Brechoire, each bringing a distinct musical approach. Every performance is slightly different, shaped by improvisation. Through composition, improvisation, and dialogue, Oud & Piano Dialogues creates a space where East meets West traditions, musicians collaborate and new sound worlds emerge.
This project is made possible in part with funds from Creative Engagement, a regrant program(s) supported by the funding agencies The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) in partnership with the City Council and Howard Gilman Foundation and administered by LMCC.
